How to get to Compass

Compass promotes healthy, sustainable travel with low impact on emissions. Do consider travelling on foot, by bicycle or public transport where possible. If coming by car, try to arrange a car share with others coming to Compass.

If you don’t have your own transport and are unable to use public transport to reach the site, please get in touch as we may be able to offer a pick-up and drop-off service with the Compass 8-seater electric vehicle.

Travelling on Foot

Walking or Cycling

There are many ways to reach the Cults area of Aberdeen including the former railway line, The Deeside Way, which runs from Duthie Park in the centre of the city all the way to Ballater, passing through Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter.

The directions below can be followed once you have arrived in Cults.

Note: All routes from North Deeside Road to Compass are in an uphill direction.

Route 1: Following the Core Path

Route 1 – Following the core path – route shown in red

✓ Start at Sainsburys on North Deeside Road.
✓ Cross the road using the traffic lights to the bottom of Kirk Brae.
✓ Follow Kirk Brae for 0.3 miles (uphill) to the junction for Friarsfield Road on the right.
✓ Walk along Friarsfield Road until you reach Friarsfield Avenue on the left.
✓ Turn into Friarsfield Avenue and follow this road until you reach Craigbank Drive.
✓ At Craigbank Drive turn left and walk a short distance.
✓ Cross the road and join the core path – see image.
✓ Walk upwards along this path until you reach the lower entrance of Compass, signposted on your left.
✓ Walk through the Compass site to the Volunteer Hub, see map 2 below.

Route 2: Following main footpaths

Route 2 – Following the main footpaths – route shown in yellow.

✓ Start at Sainsburys on North Deeside Road.
✓ Cross the road using the traffic lights to the bottom of Kirk Brae.
✓ Follow Kirk Brae for 0.3 miles (uphill) to the junction for Friarsfield Road on the right.
✓ Walk along Friarsfield Road until you reach Friarsfield Avenue on the left.
✓ Turn into Friarsfield Avenue and follow this road until you reach Craigbank Drive.
✓ At Craigbank Drive turn right and walk along until you reach Craigton Road on the left-hand side.
✓ Turn sharp left to continue along Craigton Road.
✓ Follow the road round to the left and continue straight ahead along the single-track road [no pavement] until you reach the Compass Project site, signposted on the left.

Arriving by Bike

The Compass site can be accessed by bicycle from Cults following the coloured routes in Map 1 below. Note when following the red route, the last part from Friarsfield Avenue onto the core path cannot be cycled. The blue route shows the most direct cycling route by road.

For other routes from the city centre and beyond, follow the arrival by car / taxi directions.

We are in the process of creating secure storage space for bicycles onsite. Please remember to bring your own bike lock to use whilst you are on the premises.

Travelling by Bus

To travel to Compass by bus, First Bus and Stagecoach operate routes which reach the vicinity of the project site.

Please note, you will still need to walk from each stop to reach the Compass site.

First Bus: Route Number 19

✓ Use the First Bus Aberdeen bus service number 19. This service travels between Tillydrone [going through Union Street & Holburn Junction] and Peterculter, going through Cults.
✓ If travelling from the City Centre, get off at the bus stop in Cults on North Deeside Road near the Happy Auntie Chinese takeaway shop.
✓ If travelling from Peterculter, get off in Cults on North Deeside Road just after the main junction traffic lights, opposite Will’s Toy Shop
✓ Follow directions on how to reach Compass on Foot as detailed above. You will need to walk approx. 1.2 miles to the Compass site.

Stagecoach: Route Numbers 201/202

✓ Use the Stagecoach bus service number 201/202. This service travels between Aberdeen Union Square [going through Union Street & Holburn Junction] and Torphins (202) and Ballater.
✓ If travelling from the City Centre, get off at the bus stop in Cults on North Deeside Road near the Happy Auntie Chinese takeaway shop.
✓ If travelling from Ballater direction, get off in Cults on North Deeside Road just after the main junction traffic lights, opposite Will’s Toy Shop.
✓ Follow directions on how to reach Compass on Foot as detailed above. You will need to walk approx. 1.2 miles to the Compass site.

Travelling by Car / Taxi

Directions from Peterculter, Milltimber, Bieldside & Cults:

✓ From Peterculter, follow the North Deeside Road (A93) towards Aberdeen City Centre. Travel along this road through the suburbs of Milltimber and Bieldside until you reach the suburb of Cults.
✓ Continuing on North Deeside Road you will reach an area of shops, a café and Chinese takeaway followed by a set of traffic lights with Kirk Brae on the left.
✓ Turn left and follow Kirk Brae for 0.3 miles (uphill) to the junction for Friarsfield Road on the right.
✓ Travel along Friarsfield Road to the top of the road at the junction with Craigton Road / Craigbank Drive.
✓ Turn left onto Craigbank Drive then sharp right to continue along Craigton Road.
✓ Follow the road round to the left and continue straight ahead along the single-track road until you reach a right-hand turn where you should drive straight ahead.
✓ Compass is situated on the left-hand side.

Directions from Aberdeen City Centre:

✓ From Union Street, head southwest to Holburn Street.
✓ At the first set of traffic lights (crossroads at Holburn Street/ Great Western Road), turn right onto Great Western Road
✓ Continue straight through all traffic lights, crossing over South Anderson Drive, until you pass a row of shops on the left.
✓ Turn right into Craigton Road, just after Mannofield Church (opposite Oor Wullie fish and chip shop).
✓ Follow Craigton Road to the traffic lights and continue straight ahead (still Craigton Road).
✓ Follow the road until just beyond the turning to Friarsfield Road on the left. Take a sharp right turn to continue on Craigton Road.
✓ Travel along the road, round the bend to the left then straight ahead until you reach a right-hand turn where you should drive straight ahead.
✓ Compass is situated on the left-hand side.

Coming from the North of the City or Shire:

✓ From the Westhill roundabout take the A944 signposted City Centre / ARI.
✓ Take the third exit at the next roundabout at Kingswells, signposted Cults.
✓ Follow the road through the new Countesswells housing development, along Wisely Wynd, Deer Park Drive and Gairnhill to the T-junction.
✓ Turn left for Cults and follow the road round a tight right.
✓ Just after the National Speed limit sign, take a left onto Countesswells Road, signposted ‘Aberdeen 5 miles’
✓ Follow Countesswells Road for 1 mile.
✓ Turn right onto the single-track Craigton Road [keep an eye out for the blue street name signpost].
✓ Take the next right, located at the tight left turn in the road. Compass is situated on the left-hand side.

Parking

Parking onsite is limited. Please only use this where you have mobility issues.

Onsite: On arrival, follow the driveway through the trees until the area opens out. The parking area is located in front of you, between the multi-purpose hall and the main building. Please reverse park where possible and be aware of your surroundings as there may be other people including volunteers with learning disabilities onsite.

Offsite: There is parking available on the access road near the entrance of the site. If you park here, please respect other users and park appropriately as the access road also leads to private housing. Once parked, walk down the driveway to find us onsite.
