Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Compass aims to reduce waste, reuse what we can onsite and recycle everything else as part of our dedication to sustainability, our environment and reducing our carbon footprint. Through our project, we will demonstrate ways to bring this into your own lifestyle in order to promote sensible choices and reduce our impact on climate change.
Here are just some of the ways we’ve incorporated our reduce, reuse, recycle ethos onsite to date:
Seasoned Firewood / Kindling
Over 30m³ sold locally to raise funds for the project as a result of tree management onsite.

Recycled Waste
Since the beginning of the project, we have recycled 400kg of metal, repurposed 100m³ woodchip from onsite / local tree surgeon and produced 60m³ compost from onsite organic waste.
Compost Bins & Cold Frames
The team have constructed compost bins from pallets and cold frames reusing materials generated from building refurbishment
Rainwater harvesting and irrigation
Thanks to funding from ACC’s Waste Communities Fund, Volunteering Matters Action Earth, and a generous donation from Kellas Midstream, Compass has been able to extend its rainwater harvesting capacity by 3m3.
Bowsers
Irrigation Pipe
This enables us to irrigate our organic garden, reduce our demand on groundwater (and therefore operating costs) and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rain.
Rainwater collection systems (6 x 100 litre water butts) have also been installed on our volunteer shelters, thanks to funding by Hubbub Nature Hubs.
